Things to Do in San Angelo’s Great Outdoors
There are 32 parks and over 375 developed lands in San Angelo. There is a municipal golf course along with 25 playgrounds for the kids, and 25 sports practice fields for kids of all ages. Stretching along the Concho River are a group of open spaces known as the “Crown Jewels” of parks. They wind their way through the downtown of San Angelo. There is San Angelo State Park which consists of 7,677 acres on the shore of the O.C. Fisher Reservoir. Highlighted activities are camping, picnicking, swimming, biking, hiking, running, horseback riding, mountain biking and regular biking over 50 miles of developed land. While you are biking, hiking or running, you might run into the State of Texas Longhorn herd that calls the state park its home. San Angelo also boasts a Nature Center at Lake Nasworthy where you can view alligators, bobcats, prairie dogs, and 85 different species of reptiles.
Fort Concho is a National Historic Landmark founded in 1867 by the U.S. Army to protect the settlers and to keep vital trade routes open. If you are interested in the history of the Lone Star State, this is a must see!
Finally, there is the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo. The rodeo has been held every year since 1932. This is a Nationally renowned event and brings in the best competition in the country. The Rodeo is ranked in the top 10 for monetary prizes. The Rodeo also includes a parade, a carnival, concerts and the Stock Show.
