The Outliers: Beers From the Non Continental US

Alaska
Arctic Devil Barleywine – Midnight Sun Brewing Co.
As unique as the state from which it hails, Arctic Devil is an english style Barley wine. Brewed only once per year, then aged in oak barrels that previously housed port, wine and whiskey for several months. This is a truly unique, though devastatingly high ABV (13.2%), one to be cherished during those chilly fall evenings by the fire. With a 96 BA score (world class) on Beeradvocate with over 300 reviews, this beer is quickly becoming America’s favorite Barley wine, now if you can only get your hands on it.
Hawaii
Coconut Hiwa American Porter – Maui Brewing Company
Coconut Hiwa American Porter (6.0% ABV) brewed in Kihei, has hand toasted coconut and hints of mocha in its body. The beer pours as dark brown with an off-white head of foam. The aroma is coffee and coconut. The taste is dark chocolate with some nuttiness, sweet malts with a slight coconut taste that is not overpowering and ends with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Hands down, this is a refreshing and tasty beer. The brew is unique. And it has character and taste. We, at America Unraveled, feel that if you are visiting the Aloha State you need to try it! We have chosen it to be the number one beer in Hawaii.
